Guide to lead magnets and your website

What is a lead magnet?

A lead magnet is a freebie, discount or added value item offered to potential customers in exchange for their contact information to create sales leads, which can then be converted into paying customers.

There are many types of lead magnets, the type of lead magnet you use will depend on your business and website.

A few things to consider before selecting your lead magnet:

  • Do your research – give your customers what they want!

  • Don’t give too much away – remember this is only a way to attract potential customers.

  • Include a call to action in your lead magnet

  • Ensure your lead magnet is professional and visually appealing representing your brand.

 Some examples of lead magnets:

For commerce website a lead magnet is typically a discount or an offer:

  • % off discount

  • $ amount off discount or voucher

  • Free Shipping

  • Free gift with purchase.

  • Exclusive access to products before goes public on your website.

For a service, membership or events websites a lead magnet is typically in the form of added value or a gift.  These can be in the form of:

  • PDF / White Paper / e-book / template

  • Video / Webinar

  • Quiz (with emailed results)

  • Exclusive access to a portal with freebies

  • Free trial (for membership websites)

  • Free event or a free class

Where to place your lead magnet on your website:

There are a few options – you can use one or a few:

  • Website home page

  • Announcement bar

  • Popup

  • Specific page relating to the lead magnet content

  • Abounded cart email

You can also use your lead magnet on social media or other promotions you run.

How to set up a lead magnet?

There are a few ways you can set up a lead magnet – in most cases this works alongside your email marketing platform as the goal is collecting a database & the action that your visitor will take is ‘sign up’ which will result on one of these options:

  • Welcome email (generated from your email marketing platform) with the assets (PDF, Video or a discount code or access link)

  • Post submit page on your website with the assets (the risk here is that visitor might not finish and confirm subscription but will give them immediate access).

  • App integration (on Shopify) offering the discount code and collecting the email.

Another option is to set up the resource as a free digital product set up – so customers go through cart and added as customers. Remember to add a condition before downloading that they must sign up to your new letter (and add the tick to subscribe by default).

This is a more secure way of giving away a resource as the digital download is more protected than a welcome email with PDF attachment.
